No one ever wanted to be a “ Car Salesmen” but if you just graduated from college with tons of debt or even a high school dropout this might be a great career for you! It doesn’t take much to start and it’s a great sales job. The beauty of this business is that anyone can do it but only the strong will survive and succeed. You cannot go in to this industry just to “try” it out. You’re all in or nothing. Once you treat it like a regular job you wont be successful just like anything else in life. Treat it as if you’re running your own business, which is kind of true. You have automobiles that are already paid and owned by the dealership. Your job is now to sell them. As simple as that sounds that’s the name of the game. But before you even get started, where would you start??
When searching for a dealership to apply to could be the difference in your career whether you will be a long term or short-term employee. One thing I recommend is to go on Yelp or Google reviews and find dealers with the best customer satisfaction rating. They say, “word of mouth” is the best advertisement! The reason behind that is you can sort the dealers that do take of their clients and ones who don’t. If you do your research correctly you will find a dealership that will not only look out for their clients but also their employees. Where I am employed right now, we have THE best Yelp reviews/ratings for any dealerships around us whether it’s our brand or an off brand. We get tons of clients coming in because they saw how high our Yelp reviews are. From a client’s point of view, they already trust you because they specifically came to you via the web!! The closing ratio for that deal will be extremely high. If you do not want to be in a high-pressure store I highly recommend doing your research on where to apply.
I personally started at a dealership where it was literally dog eat dog and everyone was only looking out for themselves. To this day I will never forget that type of experience but actually made me who I am today and truly appreciate what I have now. It’s your choice whether you want start in that type of environment. Although there was more negativity than positivity in that dealership, I really learned how to be on my own whether it was closing deals or engaging with a client. When I first started in the business I was told, you would either sink or swim meaning you will have to learn on your own and one will teach you anything but if you swam that meant you survived and learned from watching others. Having little to no experience is what dealers look at when someone is starting in this industry. Most dealers will look for someone who has minimal experience that way being fresh to the business you will bring positive vibes and will have the eager to pick up something new.
